Glulam offers many benefits when it comes to structural applications:

Large section sizes and long lengths – glulam can be manufactured curved or straight and is often used as structural beams. Finger jointing allows for long lengths.

Increased strength due to the laminating process – glulam is stronger than solid timber as it has fewer natural defects and a wider distribution. It is also comparable to steel in strength but is much lighter.

A high degree of dimensional stability – glulam is manufactured from seasoned timber and is therefore less prone to movement caused by changes in moisture content. However, care needs to be taken if they are used externally or in an environment with rapidly changing humidity (such as an indoor swimming pool). Swelling and shrinkage may lead to splitting or , in an extreme event, delamination of the beam.

Reliability – glulam is manufactured to strict quality requirements from stress- graded timber of known structural capacity. There are glulam quality assurance programs operating in australia, but not all manufacturers may belong to them.

Chemical resistance – glulam is resistant to most acids, rust and other corrosive agents. Typical uses in corrosive situations include animal hide curing complexes, fellmongery, fertiliser storage and swimming pools.

  • Merbau Magna Laminated Beams GL17C / GL17S

    Magna Beams are produced by a licenced manufacturer from small pieces of Kwila timber using a durable, structural glue. They are ideal for use in structures where the beauty of a rich red/brown hardwood is to be expressed or where superior strength is required. They can be used in exposed external environments including bush-fire prone areas and are resistant to termites. They stay straighter are available in longer lengths than solid timber beams.

    All beams carry certification to AS/NZS 1328, together with the 15yr manufacturer’s warranty supplied with all other
    Magna Glulam product. The products are Appearance Grade A (suitable for clear finish) and suitable for Service Class 3
    (fully exposed). They are also BAL29 rated.

  • GL17C Pine Laminated Beams

    Glulam Treated Engineered Pine

    Gluelam Pine GL17C  is a Glue Laminated Engineered Wood Product manufactured from select quality pine timber. Available in  H2 for termite protection for internal applications or H3 Treated for external, above ground, weather exposed applications.

    Pine GL17C Beam is the strongest softwood glue laminated beam available, with numerous structural applications, particularly where high load and critical performance is required.

    Builders know how practical timber beams is for lintels over large window and door openings and for garage beams, or as roof beams where spans over large spaces are dictated by design.
