The extreme external conditions found in Australia often require the natural durability and strength of Structural Hardwood.

Structural Hardwood

The extreme external conditions found in Australia often require the natural durability and strength of Structural Hardwood. Produced from predominantly Queensland grown eucalypt species, some of the hardest and most durable timbers in the world. It is naturally resistant to attacks by insects and has a high resistance to decay and fungal activity.

If the correct type of timber is not used in certain outdoor applications, it sometimes fails to perform to user expectations. In most cases this is not the fault of the material but rather because of a lack of understanding of the various species of timber, their suitability and their installation and maintenance. This is where the expert team at Garde Timber can help. We’ll help you select the right timber species and specification for your unique job.

We invite your to inspect our selection below for Unseasoned and Kiln Dried Hardwoods.. Got a question?

Unseasoned  Structural Hardwood

Garde Timber recommends only using unseasoned hardwood when there are no perceived issues with shrinking, as the timber will shrink in depth and thickness. If you are prepared to use unseasoned timber, allowances must be made for reduction in design detailing.

Each hardwood on offer at Garde Timber is visually graded to the Australian Standard AS2082. Garde Timber has certified Timber Graders to ensure quality product is supplied to the relevant standard.

Options Available as below with size Matrix.

Our mixed Treated Hardwoods  have been developed to enhance the durability and service life of timber. Such chemical treatments impregnate the wood cells, making them resistant to decay, insects and weather.

Mixed Hardwood  heartwood is naturally insect and decay resistant, and we treat sapwood with an ACQ H3 treatment, ensuring any sapwood that is used is also fully durable.

Our mixed hardwoods are treated  for external use. H3 is suitable for outside above ground, periodic wetting but where the timber can dry out. It protects timber against insects, termites and moderate decay.

ACQ – (Alkaline Copper Quaternary) contains copper and a quaternary ammonium compound. It protects against decay fungi and insects. There are a number of different forms, and generally the form which is most suitable will be selected for any given species. Its colour can range from dark green to a brownish green, and it is applied using a pressure process as a water-borne preservative. It is free of arsenic and can be painted or stained when dry.

  • Spotted Gum Unseasoned Hardwood F17

    Single Species

Spotted Gum is recognised as one of Australia’s premium native hardwoods. Its striking appearance is completed with a high degree of natural durability and strength, making it an ideal timber solution for a range of structural and decking applications.

Spotted Gum is the common name given to four species of this tree that grow along the East Coast of Australia – from northern Victoria all the way up to the northern tablelands of Queensland. It also grows in some areas of Southern Queensland. The appearance of the Spotted Gum trunk is straight, slender with a smooth bark which sheds in patches – hence the characteristic spotted look.

Spotted Gum   heartwood is naturally insect and decay resistant, and we treat sapwood with an ACQ H3 treatment, ensuring any sapwood that is used is also fully durable.

  • Red Ironbark Unseasoned Hardwood F14 / F17

    Single Species

Red ironbark is a Australian hardwood that grows readily from Victoria through the western slopes of NSW into southern Queensland. As one of a very distinctive group of Australian eucalypts, the ironbark, it can be easily recognised by its hard, deeply furrowed, rough bark ranging from a dark grey to black hue. It has been a preferred structural timber for over 200 years, due to its long-term performance in weather-exposed structural applications. Red ironbark is used for heavy engineering, transport, and marine construction, including poles, piles, sleepers, flooring, decking, bridge work, fencing, carriages and wagons, house framing and sporting goods. It is also useful for domestic and non-domestic decks, joinery, furniture and fit outs and expressed hardwood structures.

    Colour

The heart wood is a deep, dark red to red-brown, while the sapwood is a distinctive yellow.

Seasoned  Kiln Dried Structural Hardwood

Garde Timber recommends only using unseasoned hardwood when there are no perceived issues with shrinking, as the timber will shrink in depth and thickness. If you are prepared to use unseasoned timber, allowances must be made for reduction in design detailing.

Each hardwood on offer at Garde Timber is visually graded to the Australian Standard AS2082. Garde Timber has certified

Seasoned timber has many benefits including reduced weight, improved strength and cross sectional proportions which endure. It’s renowned for being more stable than unseasoned timber, due to its improbability of warping and splitting. Seasoned or Kiln Dried Structural Hardwoods are ideal for high strength, secure applications including bearers, joists, window and door opening beams, and room beams.

Garde Timber has the following Seasoned Timber options available in F17 and F27 Structural Grades:

  • Kiln Dried Hardwood F27 Durable Species

    Blackbutt

The common name blackbutt came about due to the tree’s appearance after bushfire, whereby the buttress – or butt – was significantly darkened. It is also known as coastal blackbutt to distinguish it from the tableland species, New England blackbutt. It is a commonly available commercial hardwood species in New South Wales and southern Queensland, often used for building framework.

The heartwood ranges from golden yellow to pale brown, although occasionally a slight pinkish colour may be present. The sapwood, which is not always easy to distinguish, is much paler in appearance and is resistant to attack by lyctid borer. Blackbutt has an even texture and generally straight grain making it appealing for interior use applications.

Boral Timber kiln dried structural hardwood products
are manufactured in pine compatible sizes to ensure they
can be easily integrated with structural pine products.

Solid seasoned hardwood timber tends to have a superior
dimensional stability to unseasoned hardwood timber and is much
less prone to warping and splitting. Seasoning hardwood timber
enhances the basic properties of the timber increasing the stiffness,
    bending strength and compression strength.
    Features and Benefits
    • Building a sustainable future, Boral Timber has full Chain
of Custody certification which meets the Responsible Wood
    Standard AS 4707.
    • Seasoned structural hardwood is extremely strong and
durable and will remain stable and won’t warp, swell or flake.
    • Seasoned structural hardwood offers superior nail holding
capabilities and a consistent thickness and form.
    • Ideal for all structural applications including subfloor
construction, stair components, highly loaded truss
members, wall lintels over openings and high strength
    structural beams.

    Victorian Ash Supa17

Victorian ash is the trade name for two of the tallest hardwood species in the world. This Australian hardwood takes its name from the fact that it grows in the alpine areas of Victoria,  It can refer to either mountain ash or alpine ash and as these species are species segregated in Victoria it is marketed under the trade nameVictorian ash, it is important to note that the proportions of each species can vary considerably but Victorian mountain ash and alpine ash are very similar in characteristics and look. Victorian ash should not be confused with Tasmanian oak which comprises three hardwood species: alpine ash, mountain ash and messmate and has quite a wide variation in colour mix. Importantly it should also be noted that Victorian ash is not susceptible to lyctid borer whilst Tasmanian oak is.

Victorian ash can be used for protected structural applications, such as high strength seasoned structural F17 timber framing, but it is best suited to indoor appearance applications and furniture due its low to moderate durability, its excellent working properties and its consistency in colour.
